They are more sturdy and aren’t going to have dust shaken off by being moved side to side or anything. I think it’d work for oil pastels though. I don’t pack art that way now to ship it, instead do the “foam board sandwich with glassine” type of thing with soft pastels. Clearbags are great, a lot more convenient than shrink wrap, you can always tape any extra flap onto the back to make it lay smooth. It seems to me that hanging stuff at home it would be safe treating it that way - it’s still protected from dust and there’s nothing acidic locked in with it. When tourists bought a portrait on the spot I’d mat it and tape the shrink wrap shut on the back to protect it on their way home. I’d mat it, put a back board and shrink wrap it. Later on when I hung sketches to sell on the fence in New Orleans, I used the same type of setup. It was very similar to Blick’s “Road Show” setup with archival mat, backing board and Clearbag, except that I had access to a shrink wrap machine at work so mine were always shrink wrapped. Sometimes they’d display it in that arrangement. My buyers were cool about getting it framed themselves and would sometimes store it for a while before framing. I look forward to seeing you in this Oil Pastel Painting course.Back in the old days when I did a lot of graphite portraits and colored pencils portraits, I used to store art and sell art just by matting it, putting a backing board and shrink wrapping it.
